Colorado Avalanche center Paul Stastny was named to the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, USA Hockey announced today following the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.  Stastny will represent Team USA at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games held Feb. 12-28 in Vancouver.

Stastny, 24, will be making his first appearance at the Olympic Games.  He did compete for the United States at the 2007 IIHF World Championship in Moscow, where he finished as Team USA's second-leading scorer with eight points (4g/4a) in seven games.

“I'm honored to be selected to represent the United States at the 2010 Olympics,” said Stastny.  “Playing in the Olympic Games has been a dream of mine and I look forward to the challenge of competing against the world's best players as a member of Team USA.”

Currently in his fourth season in the NHL, Stastny is Colorado's leading scorer with 39 points (9g/30a) in 42 games this year.  The Avalanche's assistant captain also leads the club in assists, power-play points (3g/8a) and faceoff percentage (49.6%).  Stastny has averaged nearly a point-per-game during his NHL career, notching 224 points (72g/152a) in 235 contests.

Born in Quebec City, Stastny was raised in St. Louis, Mo., and holds dual citizenship.  He played two seasons at the University of Denver (WCHA), where he helped the Pioneers capture the 2005 national championship as a freshman.  He was drafted by Colorado the following June (second round, 44th overall in 2005 Entry Draft) and spent one more season at DU before turning pro.

Stastny was named to the 2007 NHL All-Rookie Team after finishing second among all rookies with 78 points (28g/50a) in 82 games.  He established an NHL rookie record with a 20-game point streak that season.  A year later, Paul was selected to the 2008 NHL All-Star Game and wound up leading the Avalanche in scoring with 71 points (24g/47a) in 66 games.

Stastny is the son of Hockey Hall-of-Famer Peter Stastny, while two of Paul's uncles, Anton and Marian, also played in the NHL.  Paul's brother, Yan, is with the St. Louis Blues organization.
